Join us for the Members’ Opening Reception of the
Contemporary Museum’s fall exhibition opening
Saturday, September 12, 2009, 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Featuring “Music by Fax” a special live Mobtown Modern performance.
The Contemporary invites you to FAX, an innovative exhibition that employs the technology of the facsimile machine as a drawing device for artists. With participating artists based around the globe,
works will “arrive” via fax throughout the run of the exhibition as artists dial in to a fax machine installed in the Contemporary’s galleries. Some artists will realize single-page drawings, others
will send a series of drawings, while still others will collaborate by faxing one another before submitting a final cooperative drawing to the exhibition.
FAX is an exhibition in the experimental tradition of such historic shows as Art by Telephone staged by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 1968 and the Contemporary Museum’s recent
exhibition Cell Phone: Art and the Mobile Phone, 2007—two exhibitions that explored the creative and artistic possibilities of communication technologies. FAX will not only feature an international
roster of contemporary artists as well as prominent local artists, it will also be accompanied by teenFAX, an exhibition devoted to faxed drawing submissions by Baltimore-area high school
students.
