Nicebergs and Icebergs, 2009

Nicebergs and Icebergs is a series of photo-based, drawing-montage works.  Although the Arctic is home to the citizens of the United States, Canada, Greenland, and Russia, this geography remains impenetrable and distant to most.  Despite this, military outposts, science labs, oil rigs, and expedition flags, as well as the damages wrought by global warming, pockmark its sublime beauty.  My inquiry depicts the iceberg, emblematic of this region, from two perspectives.  The Nicebergs are calm vistas, devoid of humans, devoid of politics, mirages existing, perhaps, only for our eyes’ pleasure.  The icebergs on the other hand, are marred by signs of human activity.
