Calla Thompson’s art practice crosses media, and is a critical examination of contemporary culture. The visual language and wry humor in her work are at once comforting and familiar, dislocating and suggestive.
Thompson's work is exhibited throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Europe, Mexico, South America, and China. This includes solo exhibitions in Toronto at Gallery 44: The Centre for Contemporary Photography and Open Studio Gallery; in Washington, DC at Project 4 Gallery; and in New York City at Soho 20. Her group exhibitions include those at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum at Cornell University; the International Photography Biennial by invitation of the Centro Colombo Americano de Medellin in Columbia; New Galerie, Paris; The Delaware Center for Contemporary Art; the Arlington Arts Center in Virginia; The Painted Bride Arts Center in Philadelphia; the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse; the Korean Cultural Center Gallery of Los Angeles; and Para/Site Art Space in Hong Kong.
The federal granting body the Canada Council for the Arts has twice recognized Thompson for her artwork, and she has been awarded multiple Maryland State Arts Council Grants. She has also been the beneficiary of residencies including those at Yaddo Artist Colony, Saratoga Springs, NY; Light Work, Syracuse, NY; and Cooper Union in New York City. Thompson’s work has appeared in catalogues and more recently in Robert Hirsh’s book Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age.
Thompson received her MFA in Photography from Syracuse University and her BFA in Photography from the University of Ottawa / Université d'Ottawa, Ottawa, Canada.
